5 Most Common Mistakes in the Artist Program

If you’ve noticed by the title of the webinar, it’s not always easy being positive all the time. It’s hard to do a webinar that focuses on “mistakes”. But, there is a positive side to this! When you feel like you are doing everything you’ve been told and trained to do, it’s nice when someone who has a bird’s-eye view can help tell you what to do and what not to do. In doing that, Cara tried to think of very specific things that work well and things that don’t work well – common missteps everyone makes. This isn’t to single anyone out – these are all very common issues and mistakes that get made. Everyone is in the same boat, and as such, everyone can all learn from each other.

1) Common Mistakes in Growing Your Social Media

The most common mistake when trying to grow your social media following is showing a one-dimensional version of yourself or your business. It is so much more attractive to followers if you are a real person they can relate to. Not only does this help you gain followers, it also helps you keep them. And you are all real people and just like our makeup, we’re not one dimensional. You have a lot of talents and knowledge to share with others! If you think of the people you like to follow, they probably have more than one thing they are sharing or bringing to the table. Depending on your personality, it can be difficult to share personal things that make you feel vulnerable. Don’t worry if it’s not easy for you right away – it takes practice.

When people feel like they are being “sold” to, they tend to put up a guard versus when you are just sharing something you have a passion for. An example of this would be when people started following Cara because of makeup, then she started talking about fostering. This is something that may ring true to Cara’s followers and make them feel like they can connect with her on a deeper level. It’s something Cara’s followers may not have ever found if she hadn’t first introduced them to it.

Again, this is really a difficult thing to do for certain personality types, and it does take you out of your comfort zone. Especially if you struggle with being vulnerable or letting people in. There is a way to have a healthy relationship with your followers, and you want to strive for that. You don’t need to be online every minute and share every detail of your life. Cara has personally never done that, and look where she is now!

The best part is that you have all these options of what you want to bring to the table, and only YOU get to decide what you share. Also, don’t think of this as an all-or-nothing game – you don’t have to be on your phone all day every day, or only sharing makeup. Find your in-between and what works best for you. Wherever you fit in, find it – you’ll make connections and you’ll enjoy it so much more! Everyone has a fear of putting themselves out there and being rejected. Finding what works best for you can be a real game changer and a great tool in getting over that fear of putting yourself out there. Cara has found that the fear gets diminished when you get the kind of response that really fulfills the reason you shared it in the first place. All the positive feedback is fun and fulfilling, and keeps you moving!

2) Color Matching Too Light

Seint’s foundation is very, very unique. The way it works is different than the way traditional foundation works. Cara has found that color is the most important aspect of makeup, but it’s the most overlooked detail by the majority of people. When it comes to foundation, there are a lot of things that can make it not look its best on the skin: textural issues, oxidation, slipping and sliding around your face, enhancement of dry skin or other problem areas, etc. For Seint’s products specifically, the only time you’re going to have textural issues is when you have a color problem (because the texture of the makeup is right on point and is amazing on all skin types). One of Seint’s biggest challenges is educating customers on this fact and making sure they understand the unique qualities of the makeup. It’s even important to make sure the artists are educated as well!

It’s not uncommon to see someone who has been loving the makeup for months and then one day they just stop using it because it no longer looks good on their skin. What’s really cool about IIID Foundation is that you can have a few different colors depending on the time of the month, depending on how much you’ve been in the sun or how irritated your skin is. In other words, your skin can change a lot, and if it does change in color it can look like a textural issue. You’ll lose that smooth, buttery finish you love if you don’t have the right color.

With that being said, there are some common reasons why this may occur. You may have been taught to misunderstand color and to misunderstand foundation. So what you have to realize is that the majority of the problem when you have texture is that the makeup will enhance it if you have the wrong color. Predominately with IIID Foundation, when you have the wrong color or when it enhances the texture on your face, this means it’s too light.

People typically know when it’s too dark – they can see the line on the jaw and realize it’s too dark. But when it’s too light, they know it’s supposed to highlight and make it brighter, but they don’t realize it will show texture if it’s too light. Also, most people think they are a lot fairer than they are. There are a lot of cases where people will assume they are the lightest color when that is not the case at all. They’ve probably gone their whole life with the wrong color of foundation based on this assumption!

Because Seint has such a unique color system, Wheat, for example, goes as easily on someone from Ireland as it does on Cara’s daughter, who is full Mexican and sometimes brightens with amber. The best way to learn how to color match is to take someone you can experiment on and decide what shade you would put them in – then go a shade up and see what that looks like. Until you go too dark, you may never know how beautiful it can be on the skin. Try it, test it and have fun with it. Educate your customers so they know they might need a different color if they start to have textural issues. That way, they will have been trained to think, “Oh yes, I was told about this”, then they’ll reach out and you can help get them the correct color.

3) Low Info Online Color Matches

When someone comes to you and wants to be color matched, this is gold! So firstly, don’t take color matches lightly. You did a lot of work to find them, and they are here and ready to purchase from you. Let’s take them and make them your customer for life! Every time they order is income that goes to you. Take that seriously. Secondly, back in the day, it used to be that you would color match someone, then send them on their way and wish them good luck. That wasn’t helpful or beneficial to anyone. To combat this, we have created a template for you to use since color matching is so important. We have put a lot of thought into narrowing down the best and most important information to help you get the most out of every color match.

Did you know that 80% of our returns come back untouched? The 80% who send it back without trying it said either they got it and were too overwhelmed, or they didn’t know what to do next and they lost the motivation to try it. If they didn’t like it because of the color, you as the artist are there to help them get a new color. We’ve all gotten color matches wrong – Cara has even gotten them wrong in person! You need to be there through the whole process to help them understand what the next step is if the color isn’t right.

Seint hasn’t had a template in the past because Cara didn’t ever want anything coming from Seint to feel canned, ingenuine or impersonal. We want this to feel like a friendship. The whole point of this template is to make it feel genuine, informative and customizable for each person. We want to give them all the information and help them understand the whys. We have put a lot of thought into this, and we think it will really help you get the most out of every color match and help your customers feel confident. A wrong color match could help bond you. 4) Being Consistent on Social Media

It’s incredibly important to post the content that you would want to look at. Especially on Instagram, where it’s imperative to have high-quality images. You don’t need to go out and buy new equipment or hire a photographer – you just have to be thoughtful of the images you post. Depending on the platform you are on, make sure you’re not just posting consistently, but also posting consistent content you would like to see. When Cara gets someone saying they are posting consistently but they aren’t getting the traction they want, you can typically see that they need to up their game by putting their heart into it a bit more or by posting higher-quality images. Your consistency will pay off. Every day doesn’t need to be a world-altering picture or caption – just put your heart into it! All the consistency in the world won’t make up for ill-thought-out or half-hearted content.

5) Focus Outside Your Area of Influence

Cara’s favorite book is “7 Habits for Highly Effective People” that talks about your area of influence. You have your area of influence, which is the area where you have control (to some degree) of what happens and what you have influence over. Relate that to your Seint business (that’s your customer care, posted content, relationships, your work ethic, etc.) – it’s all in that book. Outside your area of influence is what people are doing that you like or don’t like, other people who like your posts, the way your leader, and even Seint, does things. Whatever is bumming you out or hindering you that you can’t do anything about, just remember: that is outside your area of influence. You can be bummed, wallow, feel frustrated or jealous, yet you can’t do anything about it. But if it’s in your area of influence, you CAN do something about it! Cara’s advice is to stay in your area of influence, and every time you are doing good things, your area widens and grows, and your ability to make a change when you see something you don’t like also grows. If you’re in your mote (outside your area of influence) it’s depressing and it zaps your energy. People that live in their circle is where all the magic happens, and that’s when others want to join you!
