Leadership is something that is the best part of what Cara does. It’s also something Cara never thought about when she was in the beginning stages of creating her own business. She had no idea what Masckara would turn into, let alone that it would end up being a direct sales company. Cara soon came to realize just how important leaders are to any business, but especially one like Maskcara.
She realized just how gratifying it was to see and help people grow, and being the one to help give them a boost made her recognize just how important being a strong leader is. Telling someone something they really need to hear to giving them the advice they need to finally go after their dreams is the best feeling. It’s something that everyone probably enjoys doing, but it can also be something that is extremely difficult that requires a ton of trial and error.
One of the biggest parts of being a good leader is being one that grows. This will make you more valuable to people already on your team, and will also make more people want to join your team as well.
What drives Maskcara’s leaders to be the best they can be:
Leadership in a company is not just about being a “boss babe” in a dog-eat-dog world. Generosity will pay you more in the bank and in the enjoyment of your business far more than an aggressive business mentality will. A true generosity that isn’t hindered by expectations is what makes Masckara’s leaders so unique. It’s a genuine attitude of giving that will reward in positive things to come. Doing the generous thing, being kind and leading by helping others will always result in more success in the end.
It’s difficult to build a team and help them grow if you don’t have that feeling of generosity. If you’re not willing to share your knowledge with the people closest to you, it’s going to be difficult to grow your team and for them to do the same.
Anything that you want to see happen on your team is what you yourself should be doing. This is especially true for how you treat your downline, because it will directly impact how they treat their downline, and so on. This doesn’t always mean being generous and nice - sometimes it means having boundaries and being clear about the direction you want to see things go in. There is a lot of learning as you go and trying things out. Realizing if things work or don’t work is part of what makes a good leader - being able to recognize the most beneficial way to lead your team is how you will see the most success in your business.
Take the time to listen to what people have to say. Their feedback is so important to ensure you get the most out of your business. Everyone is on an island of their own, working together; this can make giving feedback challenging because Maskcara isn’t about being a dictator.
One of the ways to go about assisting your team in reaching their potential and being inspired is by helping them feel heard. Making them feel like they are part of the process is a huge step in gaining their trust.
You can never overstate how important trust is. If your downline doesn’t trust you, you are going to have a hard time inspiring them to be the best they can be. If they believe that you have their best interests at heart, they will be more likely to open up to you when they have questions.
The number one thing of Maskcara’s goal is having the Artists’ best interests at heart. Don’t forget to show that you actually do care, rather than just saying the words without ever following through. Think of it as an exercise in active listening - don’t just nod along and act like you’re following the conversation. Really listen to what the other person is saying and take the time to respond with a thoughtful and helpful comment.
The key to achieving this is to have this genuine interest and care from the very beginning. If you ever feel like you’re focusing on the wrong things (getting a certain amount of followers or likes, etc.), you are probably losing sight of what Maskcara means to you and how much your business has helped you grow. Take a minute and remind yourself of the intention you first started with that was coming from a very real place.
It’s pretty easy to tell when someone is genuinely passionate about what they are doing. If you don’t believe what you’re saying, people will have a hard time believing it as well. So instead of focusing on faking it ‘til you make it, try actually believing what you are trying to get others to believe. Take a moment to reconnect with what really matters and what really motivates you.
There are people, for whatever reason, who are unwilling to put in the time and energy it takes to be successful. Yet, these are also some of the people who ask for a lot of attention. As much as you would like to give these people all of your time and energy, you have to learn how to triage your time. There’s a lot that needs to be done, and there are usually several people who are needing your attention, like your husband and kids.
So when you have someone who is really demanding of your time and is draining all of your energy, you are not at your best to be able to help someone. It’s really important to recognize early on who might be one of these so-called energy suckers. One way Cara determines this is by giving them a set of tasks and observing how they do them.
For instance, try assigning them to do three makeovers, then have them report back to you with how they went. This is really going to give you some insight into what they’re willing to do, which will allow you to better triage your time accordingly.
As a leader, you may find yourself having to deal with situations you have no idea how to handle. The last thing you want to do is jump into the situation and not have the person feel heard. On the other hand, there’s a fine line between doing this and getting sucked into their negative vortex.
One way to approach these types of situations is by asking them, “What can I do to make it better?” or “Let’s make a plan to make this better for you.” You’ll be surprised at how often people don’t actually want you to do anything. They just want their voice to be heard. By acknowledging their situation, you are turning it from something they couldn’t quite attain to something you are now both working on together. It’s not “me against you” or “me and you against the company”, it’s “you and I together tackling this problem.” Sometimes all people want is validation, and this is a simple solution.
No matter the size of your team, it is so important to get to know the people around you. Learn about their likes and dislikes and what they like to do outside of Maskcara. One of Cara’s favorite ways to do this is by utilizing the Enneagram test. It’s a personality code that helps you know first, what your number is, and second, how to best converse with other numbers.
We sometimes tend to look at the world through a mirror instead of a window. When other people do things, we tend to measure their actions by our own yardsticks. It’s important to realize that not everyone wants to be treated the same way. That’s why Cara suggests using the Enneagram test to better understand the different personalities that are out there, so you don’t waste a ton of time and energy on someone who doesn’t reciprocate your gesture.
To get started understanding the different personalities, Cara advises that you read “The Road Back To You” by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzann Stabile. It’s a beginners guide to understanding people and giving them what they need, and not what you need. It’s a great book in helping you learn what your own personality is and how you can best serve the other personalities in the book.
